A. Data-Driven Skins: Using Grasshopper to Build Form Generators
Andres Gonzalez-Posada & Doaa Alsharif (McNeel’s RhinoFabStudios)
Data-driven design is intended for exploring new shapes using generative algorithms. This workshop will serve as a tutorial for Grasshopper, a graphical editor tightly integrated with Rhino’s 3-D modeling tools. No knowledge of programming needed, this program allows designers to build form generators from the simple to the awe-inspiring and creates forms through a series of mathematical operations, instead of conventional commands. This workshop will introduce participants to the logic and principles of parametric-created skins. You’ll learn about different methods of exploring variations of surfaces based on tiling and tessellation. Also, the new data driven membranes will become responsive to different levels of interactions creating order and rhythm or even unpredictable or random behaviors. Design and concept development come to life in numerous real-life examples.
1) Bring your own laptop. Basic knowledge of Rhino highly recommended.

Given the context of tourism and local boom and bust cycles, it’s been difficult to expect a world-class level of financial investment in quality building enclosures. But as Miami has grown more established, outside investments have increased and so has attention on the city as a mecca of high-design has begun to modify the level of expected building quality by the public, developers, and designers.
This workshop will give an intense crash course on the guiding principles of ‘high-performance’ facade design; namely the crucial principles which are of practical everyday use to any architect. Broken down into 3 discussions and Q&A sessions: this course will compress the equivalent of one semester of high-performance curtain wall coursework into one afternoon—achieved through carefully crafted graphic aids, hands-on interaction with pressure-equalized systems, detailed Q&A sessions. · Identify the attributes of high-performance.
· Understand the methods of precipitation management: from lesser to higher performance; Barrier, hybrid, pressure-equalized systems.
· Review the Flexibility of Systems: Rigid, framed, hybrid and unitized systems.
· Learn to analyze curtain wall system drawings to identify performance level
· Cost vs. Value: The long-term benefits of higher performance systems and when they are justified versus the hybridized versions which can be achieved when the maximum quality is not feasible.
A panel of facade consultants and designers use case studies and discuss pertinent issues regarding the building envelope including design, life-span, quality, resilience and performance. Attendees will be better equipped with the knowledge and confidence to discuss the aesthetic integrity and costs of facades with their clients.
Developments in what can be constructed with ETFE and glass occur at a rapid pace that make both options valuable building materials. But which do you choose for your next project? Both materials have their advantages—particular performance characteristics, large ranges of potential applications—and disadvantages. In this workshop, attendees will hear from ETFE, glass, and engineering specialists who will use case studies to show which materials were specified for certain projects and why.
